🌊 Discover the Côte Bleue
- A preserved 25 km coastline between L'Estaque and Martigues, alternating high cliffs, coves and turquoise-water calanques — the Côte Bleue has been a protected marine park since 1983: fishing, anchoring and diving are regulated in the protected areas.
- The small, typical harbours of Niolon, Carry-le-Rouet (casino, marina) and Sausset-les-Pins have kept their fishing-village atmosphere.
- The port of Carro, a former tuna-fishing harbour, is known for its fish market and surf spots.
- Local specialities to try: poutargue (dried grey mullet roe), mélet (macerated anchovies, a Martigues recipe), and Brousse du Rove, an AOC goat's cheese.
- The oursinades (sea urchin festivals) animate the harbours on the first three Sundays of January and February: sea urchin tastings in a friendly atmosphere.
🌬️ Weather and mistral
The Côte Bleue is sometimes affected by the mistral wind: when it blows hard, the funnel effect of the cliffs amplifies the current and makes swimming dangerous in some calanques, and the water can cool quickly. Remember to check the marine forecast before a boat trip or a swim, and choose calm days for kayaking or paddleboarding.
